This is the nr. 38 book in the Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge!
Se avete guardato la TV sotto natale almeno una volta nella vostra vita sapete già di cosa parlo. È uno dei più famosi racconti di Charles Dickens e narra le “avventure notturne” del signor Ebenezer Scrooge.
If you’ve
watched TV around Christmas time at least once in your life you already know
what I’m talking about. It’s one of Charles Dickens’ most famous novel and
tells the “night adventures” of Mr Ebenezer Scrooge.
Il vecchio finanziere Ebenezer Scrooge è ricco e avaro, per lui l’unica compagnia gradita è quella della sua cassaforte e detesta il Natale poiché ritiene sia una perdita di tempo. Costringe il suo unico impiegato a lavorare anche la mattina della vigilia, tratta male suo nipote Fred (unico parente in vita) e maltratta tutti coloro che per strada gli fanno gli auguri o intonano canti natalizi.
La sera della vigilia rincasa come suo solito nella grande e lussuosa case e inizia subito a sentire strani rumori, ma non vi dà più di tanto peso finché non appare il fantasma del signor Marley, suo socio in affari e defunto 7 anni prima.
La visione lo impaurisce, soprattutto quando questo gli spiega che la catena che porta alla vita, fatta di lucchetti, portamonete e tutti quegli oggetti che lo hanno tenuto lontano da chi gli voleva bene, rappresenta la sua dannazione eterna e che , se non rimedia presto, la sua sarà ancora più lunga e pesante. Lo informa, quindi, che riceverà la visita di tre fantasmi e svanisce.

Tutti questi ricordi lo fanno sentire un po’ in colpa per come tratta sia il nipote che il dipendente.
Questo lo porta indietro nel tempo e gli fa rivivere vari momenti in cui era felice e gli fa ricordare l’affetto che provava per la madre e per la sorella, come fosse felice con il suo primo capo e gli ricorda della fidanzata, Bella, che lo ha lasciato perché lei era povera e li era diventato ricco e freddo. Il secondo fantasma è quello del Natale Presente.

Dividono una povera cena, perché lo stipendio è troppo poco e basta appena per vivere ma non possono comprare le medicine per Timmy. Poi il fantasma lo porta per il mondo e gli fa vedere che tutti, anche chi vive in condizioni meno agiate, si scambiano gli auguri. Infine lo porta a casa di Fred che passa le feste con amici e, benché rida delle sue maniere, gli rivolge un pensiero gentile e brinda alla sua salute. Allo scoccare dell’ora il fantasma sparisce trasformandosi in nebbia e lo lascia solo.

Lo porta nel Natale futuro dove Scrooge sente diverse persone parlare di un vecchio tirchio che è morto e di quanto siano felici di questo, tra i quali anche sue due servi che da un rigattiere cercano di vendere tutto quello che sono riusciti a rubare dopo la sua morte e così capisce che si parlava di lui. Infine il fantasma lo porta sulla sua tomba e li vede Fred che è dispiaciuto per la sia morte ma anche contento per l’ammontare dell’eredità. Li vicino Scrooge vede anche la tomba del piccolo Timmy, il quale si è ammalato troppo e non è riuscito a sopravvivere.

La mattina dopo Scrooge è un altro uomo e, avuta la conferma che è il giorno di Natale da un ragazzo che passa sotto la sua finestra, lo manda a comprare il più grosso tacchino e lo fa mandare a casa del suo dipendente, poi si lava e si veste e si presenta a casa del nipote dove passa il più bel natale di sempre.
La mattina successiva affronta il dipendente con il vecchio cipiglio e lo punisce per il ritardo con un cospicuo aumento di stipendio.
The old
financier Ebenezer Scrooge is rich and greedy, the only company he likes if the
one of his safe and hates Christmas because he thinks it’s a waste of time. Makes
his only employee work even on the Eve of Christmas, mistreats his nephew Fred
( his only living relative) and mistreats all those on the streets who wish him
a Merry Christmas or sing Christmas carols.
On the
night of the Eve of Christmas he goes back to his big and rich home and starts
hearing weird noises, but he doesn’t pay much attention, until the ghost of his
old partner, Mr Marley, who died 7 years before, appears.
The vision
scares him, mostly because he wears a chain at his waist, made with lockets,
money bags and all those objects that kept him away from all those who loved
him, which represents his eternal damnation and that, if Scrooge doesn’t’
remedy quickly, will have one longer and heavier. He informes him he’ll be
visited by three ghosts and disappears.
The first
is the ghost of the past Christmas.
This one
carries him back in time and makes him live again the times when he was happy
and makes him remember how much he cared for his mother and sister, how happy
he was when he started his first job and the girlfriend he had, Bella, that
left him because he became rich and cold while she was poor. All these memories
makes him feel guilty towards his nephew and his employee.
The second
ghost is the ghost of the present Christmas.
He carries
him to see how people spend the holidays. The first is the employee that, even
if he’s poor, he’s happy with his wife and his many children, along with the
little crippled Timmy. They share a poor dinner, because the salary he makes is
too little and it’s enough to live but not to buy Timmy’s medicines. The ghost
takes him to see people around the world that, even if not rich, exchange
greetings. Then he takes him to his nephew Fred’s house, where he’s having fun
with friends and, even if he laughs about how rude he is, he thinks kindly
about his uncle and makes a toast in his honor.
When the
time’s up the ghost disappears in fog and leaves him alone.
The third
is the ghost of the future Christmas.
He’s the
saddest of all. This one doesn’t talk, he just points with his finger what he
should look at. He takes him in the future Christmas when Scrooge hears some
people talking about an old stingy man that died and they’re all happy about
it, between which he recognizes two of his servants that are trying to sell
some of his things they stole after his death to a junk dealer and so he
realizes the man they’re talking about it’s him. Then the ghost takes him to
his tomb and there he sees Fred sad for his death but also happy for the
heredity. Next to him there’s Little Timmy’s tomb that died because he was too
sick and couldn’t survive.
The next
morning Scrooge is an other man and, after a kid passing through confirmed him
that was the Christmas day, he sends him to buy the bigger turkey and sends it
to his employee’s house, then gets dressed and shows up at his nephew’s home
where he spends the best Christmas ever.
The next
morning he faces his employee with his old frown and punishes him for being
late with a salary increase!
Di questo racconto sono state prodotte centinaia di trasposizioni cinematografiche: moderne, in costume, cartoon, digitale, fumetti,… ce ne sono addirittura in film muto!!
Personalmente (ma solo tra quelli che ho visto) penso che il più simile al testo sia la versione recente, tutta digitale, in cui Scrooge e i tre fantasmi sono interpretati da Jim Carrey. L’ho trovato molto bello anche se alcuni si sono lamentati perché sostenevano facesse paura.
Altre versioni che ho visto sono quella Disney a cartoon, un film per la TV (di cui non ricordo il titolo) il cui protagonista è un produttore televisivo, ne hanno fatta una versione persino quelli di Radio Deejay!!!
Anche numerosi serie TV hanno attinto a questo racconto per i loro speciali di Natale: inutile che ve lo dica, anche Doctor Who!!!
Non ci resta che augurarvi un Buon Natale e…siate buoni!!!

Other versions I saw are the cartooned one from Disney, a movie for the TV ( whose title I don't remember), where the main character is a TV producer, even the guys from Radio Deejay made one!!!
Many TV series drew from this tale to make their Christmas specials: useless to say, even Doctor Who did!!!
