CORMORAN STRIKE

Insieme risolvono caso eclatanti facendo fare brutta figura a Scotland Yard!

A presto!

THE DOME

A couple of years ago I saw was programmed to be aired a movie called FRIED GREEN TOMATOES. I thought "What a weird title! I wonder what kind of movie that is. Well, let me record it and then I'll see".
What can I say: I LOVED IT!!! And it's based on book written by Fannie Flagg.

During the movie I saw the main characters making this dish. Since then I just couldn't wait to try this recipe but it's not that easy to get some green tomatoes!
I must confess something: I hate cooked tomatoes, BUT I really liked this!!!! :-)

To create this dish you'll need: 3/4 green tomatoes, flour, oil, absorbing paper.

First of all cut the tomatoes in slices, of about 1 cm, then flour and toss them in the hot oil in the pan. With this method it might seem to you that flour doesn't stick to the slices: it's perfectly normal, they've not been "wetted" with egg like the usual flouring. I did as I saw in the movie ( I still haven't read the book, sorry, but I have so many...!!)
Once they've become a bit golden take them out of the pan and put them on a dish with some absorbing kitchen paper.

Feddy

Once the oil dryed put the slices on a dish and voila!
Ready to be eaten!! Enjoy!

BOOKS WE LOVE: LITTLE WOMEN

This is the nr. 165 book in the Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge!

I really loved this book althought at first I had some difficulties with it. It was gifted to me when I was in the elementary school, I started it many times but I never went over the 50 pages!
Then, one day, not much ago, I decided to try it again and I read it in a heartbeat!!
This is the story of 4 sisters (Maggie, Jo, Amy and Beth March) and it follows them for many years: first dealing with the poverty brought by the American civil War, then with the first "encounters" with the other sex, starting with their new neighbour and then dear friend Laurie, then with their father's convalescence after beign hurt in the fight, and other experiences that, more or less, are part of everyone's life.

The story is so beautiful because it gives a specific portrait of that time and tells how middle families were dealing with the head of family's absence during such hard time as war.
It's definetely one of the reading I suggest most of all to those who love "family sagas" and to those who are hopelessly romantic.
They even made many movies but the more famous are two, the first shot in 1949 with the unforgettable Elisabeth Taylor, who played Amy, and the second one in 1994, with Winona Ryder, Kirsten Dunst and Claire Danes. And you can even find a super young Christian Bale, playing Laurie!!!

Baci Ale

Plus, one of the best marriage proposal of literature is kept in this very book, the one that Laurie makes to Amy.
It's a book that remaines into your heart forever, so if you've never ever read it (how could you not have read it!!!) go fetch a copy to a library, download a digital one, it doesn't matter how, but my advice is nothing but READ IT!!

BOOKS WE LOVE: THE GREAT GATSBY

This is the nr. 116 book in the Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge!

When THE GREAT GATSBY movie by Baz Luhrman with Leonardo Di Caprio was work in progress I didn't know much about it.

So, as soon as I found that the Newton Compton started a classic books collection at 1€ each I bought it immediately.
And saying that I read it in a heartbeat is only the right thing!

I know, it's a small book but I really loved it and I liked Fitzgerald's writing.

This is the story of a man, Jay Gatsby, that has never forgotten the woman he met and fell in love with during the war, Daisy Buchanan, and every night he has huge parties at his house, inviting lots of people, hoping that she comes.
His luck (or not) wants that right next to his beautiful house goes to live Daisy's cousin, Nick Carraway, which is the narrator of our story, and becoming his friend he finally gets back in touch with Daisy.

I just did a little shrinked summary, but the story goes deeper than that.

I really loved this book, and I liked a lot the movies, too. I saw first the one with Leonardo Di Caprio, and the other day I saw the one with Robert Redford. I must be honest, I liked better the one with Robert Redford, I don't know why, I just do. I could probably stay here with you to talk about all those things I liked and didn't like about one and the other but I don't think it's right!

Feddy

Anyway I liked the one of the last yeat, and to me Leonardo Di Caprio is a certainty. If there's him, than the movie is beautiful!!! I'm sorry for this comment, but I fell in love with him when he played Romeo, an other Baz Luhrman movie.

One thing that I noticed is that the two Gatsbys clothes are very much alike. I don't really remember if the book they're described, but I really liked that in the newest movie.
Did you read it? Did you see any of the two movies?!?

BOOKS WE LOVE: DA VINCI CODE

This is the nr. 59 book in the Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge!

Like many other people, I grew closer to THE DA VINCI CODE when it was about to be in cinemas. I can remember myself reading it at the beach, when I was about 16.
THE DA VINCI CODE follows the symbology Harvard professor, Robert Langdon in Paris, where he's suspected for the murder of the Louvre curator, Jacques Saunier. But the help this last one's granddaughter, Sophie, and the scholar Sir Leigh Teabing finds out the truth, thanks to some clues hidden in some of Leonardo's art. During this way to the truth, we also cross the path of an anchient secret society known as the Priory of Sion, that has been hiding a secret that might change the view of the foundation of Christianity as it has always been told by the Catholic Church.

Even if at the beginning I found the story slow, when I kept reading and with the suspence growing on me I liked it even more. I must say that these kind of mysteries fascinate me. I don't remember well the facts told in the book as much as I might remember the movie, which I've seen several times, but all these "secrets" about Leonardo da Vinci, the Church, Opus Dei and secret societies are really intiguing, so much that I even looked on line if a Mary Magdalene Gospel could possibily exist! I haven't found it, in case you were wondering!!! :-)

Every time I look at Leonardo's THE LAST SUPPER, now to me is a very different experience. I can see that there's no chalice, that Jesus and the person sitting at his left could or could not be Mary Magdalene, that they wear the same colours, and so many other things that, if you saw the movie and/or read the book, too, might have noticed and every time you might look for these things.

Feddy

Some time ago I was in Lucca and I went to visit an exhibit about Leonardo da Vinci, and there were some of his discoveries and inventions and there were also some of his notes. I don't know if you can remember but in the book/movies it's mentioned that he used to write his notes backwards so that no one could decipher them, and actually it was amazing to me to find all those things and see them with my own eyes!!!

THINGS WE LOVE: SHERLOCK HOLMES

To me it was never really a mistery who Sherlock Holmes was, but I never stopped to look for more infos.
The first step I did towards him was, as for many of you ( even if probably you'll deny it!!!) with the movies with Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law!!!

But when I finally decided to watch the english series SHERLOCK from BBC, I fell in love with it! Not to count the charm Benedict Cumberbatch has, but he really is a fantastic Sherlock, as much as Martin Freeman is as John Watson (actor that many of you will know as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit).

I must admit that I really love this modern version of Sherlock and, finally, I decided to buy the books. And I like them! A lot! So much that I already read  A Study in Scarlet and at the moment I'm reading The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. I'm waiting that, as soon as she remembers, my cousin (who works in a library where you can buy second hand book in good condition) gets me others!!!
I must say that I've entered an other fandom, and my head is full of things I like but you know what?!? Who cares!!! I stopped worrying for what the others might think of me for what I like for a very long time!!!
I like it so much that I immediately went looking for something Sherlock themed that I like. Here's my wishlist from Etsy...
1.
Troppo carina.
I LOVE teapots and this one I'd definetly buy it! Too cute.

2.

me ne sono innamorata, perchè è troppo tenero!

I saw this ring while I was looking for something Lord of the Rings
themed and I fell for it, it's too sweet!

3.

This painting of Benedict/Sherlock playing the violin
(which is what Sherlock loves to do when he's thinking) it's amazing.

4.

Even if I always say to myself that the phone cases I have are enogh,
I always go looking for them and this is one of my favourites at the moment.

 5.

You already know how much we love reading around here and
what goes better with a book if not a nice Sherlock bookmark?!?

Maybe the smell of it won't be that good, but I think it's nice that you
can find inspiration to make candle, and to receive
smells from stories!

Baci, Feddy

These are only some of the things that I found, or it would be history longest post ever! :)
And have you ever had this little obsession I have, to look for your fave books/movie/tvseries themed objects?!?

BOOKS WE LOVE: THE LORD OF THE RINGS

These are the nr. 91  and the nr. 252 books in the Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge!

I read the whole trilogy in a month and I thought it was amazing!
Then I kept going with "The Hobbit", "The Silmarillion", "Farmer Gils of Ham", "Hurin's Sons". I liked his books so much that then I did some research: Tolkien was the first to create this kind of fantasy literature, he was influenced by old european leggends and created an entire world, with its mythology, its languages, its costumes, its writings... and all the other fantasy authors that came later were inspired by his works. A genius!

BOOKS WE LOVE: CARRIE

This is the nr. 32 book in the Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge!

Right these day in cinemas there's the Carrie remake, taken from a Stephen King's books, with the amazing Julianne Moore and Chloe Moretz, so this the right time to talk about it!!!!

Carrie White is a shy girl at her last year at high school: she doesn't make friends easily, because she's lived all her life segregated at home for her mother's will, a Christian fundamentalist. She's a victim of bullying and, also because of this, one day she finds out she has the ability to move objects with the power of the mind. Strong of this new discovery, she convinces her mother to let her go to prom, even if she doesn't agree, to which she was invited thanks to her only friend intervention. A class mate, Chris, to whom was prohibited to attend prom for her aggressive behaviour and because she refuses to pay for the insults to Carrie, plans with her boyfriend a joke to embarass her even more in front of the whole school, spilling on her a bucket full of porks' blood. When Carrie and Tommy get crowned, Chris, hidden under the stage makes the blood fall onto Carrie. Suddenly the whole school starts to laugh, teachers included. While Tommy, pissed at this, is looking for the guilty one, the bucket falls on his head and kills him, but everyone just keeps laughing. Carrie, seeing the bullism again, gets mad and blocks all exits with the telekinesis. Fulminates the headmaster and the vice principal through the microphone, the electricity burns all decorations and the school goes up to flames. When everyone's dead she gets out of school, on her way to home she kills everyone she meets. Chris and her boyfriend are the only ones who survived, but trying to run over Carrie with the car, she overturns their car, that goes up to flames and explodes, killing the two. Once home, her mother was waiting for her to sacrifice her to God, because she thinks she's a sinner and possessed from the devil. Carrie gets hurt, but it will be her to kill the mother. Carrie, desperate, with her power makes the house crumble down and dies.

It was my first Stephen King. I was about 12 years old and, like most of the discoveries in life, it was purely casual.
I was back home from a month at the seaside for the colony and I spent it all reading romance novels and I was tired of love stories and I didn't have anything interesting for me at home, and I still didn't know how to choose books at the book shop. A neighbor came to my help and lent me this book. It was love at first reading! After that I read lots of King's books, which became one of my favourite authors, and I must say that I loved them all!

BOOKS WE LOVE: A CHRISTMAS CAROL

This is the nr. 38 book in the Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge!

If you’ve watched TV around Christmas time at least once in your life you already know what I’m talking about. It’s one of Charles Dickens’ most famous novel and tells the “night adventures” of Mr Ebenezer Scrooge.

KIDS BOOKS

As you well know we love to read, and this passion (luckily) was transmitted to the Kid.
As soon as he could walk ( by the 10th month of his life) I freed a shelf of the library and I teached him, laboriously, where and which books he could touch. It took me a while but it worked!
His books are all broken and glued, some many times, but often during the day, mostly if he's sleepy, he comes next to me with a book in his hands and says "Wead mommy!"
To him everything's ok, as soon as it's coloured and with easy stories, but I developed a true love for two authors who publish with the publishin house Dami: Tony and Matt Wolf.
We have a real collection and I truly can't resist when I see one! The illustrations are so cute, some look like rag dolls, all coloured and the nursery rhymes, cheerful, funny and really easy for the kids to understand. With one of these the Kid learned all the animal sounds.
I leave you a view of all our belongings and, if you look really good, you can see the tape holding them together!!
my faves

E voi? Cosa leggete ai vostri bambini ( figli, nipoti, cugini, vicini, ....)?

And you? What do you read to your kids ( children, grandchildren, cousins, neighbors, ....)?
